Museum lighting design
“Five Ones”  principles
High-quality museum lighting is not only a protection for precious cultural relics in museums, but also a comprehensive artistic expression of the colors, forms, materials and stories of museum exhibits. As a systematic project, museum lighting needs to combine lighting technology, exhibition themes, artistic effects, etc. to achieve a comprehensive design.

In the ten years of museum lighting practice, AKZU combined the museum lighting design concept of "safety, revivification, comfort, energy saving and sustainable development, photography-friendly", sorted out and summarized the museum lighting design principles of "one game, one visual theme, one scene, one strategy, one object, one light, and one vein", providing valuable reference for more museum lighting research and practice.

Lighting design and exhibition design are carried out simultaneously and comprehensively
Lighting is an integral part of exhibition presentation and one of the most important factors affecting the exhibition effect. At the beginning of the project, the lighting scheme and the selection of lamps for the exhibition should be preliminarily planned according to the exhibition design renderings. During the implementation of the project, the lighting effect should be unified with the overall exhibition under the premise of considering the exhibition design and display effect.

At different stages, we should fully combine the needs of curators, exhibition designers, multimedia and electronic system engineers, actively communicate and work closely together to implement the lighting scheme. During the installation stage, on-site dimming and debugging, evaluation and acceptance are carried out to ensure the presentation of ideal exhibition effects. Therefore, museum lighting is the result of overall planning and simultaneous advancement with all parties in the project, and it is a "chess game".

The lighting matches the exhibition narrative rhythm, showing a highly consistent visual theme
Museum exhibitions are generally composed of multiple parts. The overall visual effect of the lighting of each part should be coordinated with the corresponding theme, and multi-level lighting techniques should be used to make each part match the overall tone of the exhibition and be consistent with the overall viewing atmosphere.

The overall visual effect of the exhibition lighting should plan the illumination design of the basic lighting and the near-field, mid-field, and far-field lighting, make a good distinction between light and dark, guide and adjust the audience's emotions and viewing atmosphere, and highlight the deep spiritual significance embodied in the exhibition. The rhythm of the exhibition theme is coordinated with the visual effect, showing a regular, orderly, and clear "visual theme".

Customize the lighting solution for each scene
Exhibitions are usually presented in multiple scenes. In order to restore the scene in combination with the characteristics of the exhibits and the theme of the exhibition, lighting design needs to combine and select reasonable light angles. Based on a variety of light angles, combined with the selection of power, color temperature, installation method, and light projection direction, a lighting system with rich light types, flexible installation, and wide applicability is formed.
At the same time, lighting design and exhibitions should be coordinated and balanced, and the brightness transition and atmosphere connection of different scenes should be done well to better create a comfortable, wonderful, and memorable exhibition experience for the audience.

Customize reasonable lighting methods for each exhibit
The volume and shape of cultural relics exhibits vary. There are many forms of display methods, such as flat display, three-dimensional display, and showcase display, and the types of showcases are also rich and varied. Therefore, under the premise of doing a good job in cultural relics protection, it is necessary to determine the lighting method one-to-one in combination with the characteristics of the cultural relics themselves, light sensitivity, and exhibition design effects. For sculpture exhibits, attention should be paid to three-dimensional projection, presenting the atmosphere from multiple angles. While the ambient light produces a certain contrast and highlights the three-dimensional sense, it should also avoid direct glare caused by excessive contrast, which will affect the display effect.

The lighting of flat exhibits usually uses a combination of key lighting and background lighting to control the contrast, so that the exhibits stand out from the background and become the visual center of the audience, so that the display effect is maximized. In the showcase, a multi-directional combination of lighting methods should be selected according to the volume, size, display surface, display method, and installation conditions of the lighting equipment of the cultural relics to highlight the precious value of the cultural relics.

Show clear context, build positive emotions, and trigger deep resonance
One Inherited Continuity
Show a clear context and build a positive emotion that resonates deeply.
Each museum exhibition usually has a significant theme feature. In order to highlight the main line of the exhibition, it is necessary to show a clear thread and be consistent. Museum lighting is a systematic project and an important factor in guiding vision and affecting feelings in the exhibition environment.

During the visit, the theme, color, spirit and values of the exhibition will be deeply imprinted in the minds of the audience, building a positive emotion and stimulating the audience's inner resonance. The lighting design needs to clearly guide the theme thread, and use carefully designed lighting to tell the historical stories presented in the exhibition, depict the key cultural relics, and explain the main spirit.
